I love this scene because she’s not judging him for what he did - she’s not even acknowledging it at first. It’s him that brings it up. But for once Elena understands his motives and she’s not pressing the issue. She’s merely trying to break through Damon once more, with that comment about compassion. He doesn’t take the bait, though…he decides to “stay mean”. But Elena knows what he’s doing, hence her last retort…he’s pushing her away…the question is: will she let him?
